GIS is defined as a computer based information system that is used to input, store,
retrieve, manipulate, analyze and output geospatial data in planning and management  
of our natural resources, environment, landuse, transportation, urban facilities etc.
Geographic Information Systems enable the generation of intelligent and rich maps. A GIS provides a means for representing information in the spatial form, with regard to location and coordinates. This result in the formation of a comprehensive mapping system, comprising of the information, that is, the user’s requirement.
Schematic representation of GIS will crystalize the concept. The ES has also got an infrastructure for undertaking the Remote Sensing projects.

Broadly there are two types of computer users in the world - those who have an MS Office orientation and work with databases, and those who work in CAD environment. ES has expertise on creating Raster based GIS as well as Internet based GIS.
